THE GREAT TEDDY BEAR PICNIC AT THE GREAT ORME TRAMWAY The Great Orme Tramway in Llandudno, North Wales held a Teddy Bears' Picnic at the summit station on September 20th 2003 to celebrate the Great Orme Railways Centenary, and event which also coincided with the Centenary of the Teddy Bear. The Weather was unkind to us with rain most of the day but the Warden of the Nature Reserve was kind enough to let us all set up our displays inside the Nature Reserve Information Centre. Organisers at the tramway decided played host to a teddy bears picnic after research showed that the first of the modern “teddys” bear was sold in the same year that the tramway made it's first ever journey in 1902 - 101 years ago and they linked this with the writing of the song “The Teddy Bears Picnic.” The event today celebrated the opening of the upper section of the tramway in 1903. The day played host to a very special guest - Jim Kennedy Jr, son of award winning songwriter Jimmy Kennedy OBE, the man who wrote the lyrics to the classic children's song The Teddy Bears' Picnic Jimmy also wrote many of Britain's best loved songs including 'We're Going to Hang Out Our Washing on the Siegfried Line’, ‘Red Sails in the Sunset’ and the 'Hokey Cokey' and many others. Jim, who gave a talk about his father which we all enjoyed also said “The Teddy Bears' Picnic at The Great Orme Summit Complex celebrated two very historic events. I'm was really looking forward to seeing the vast range of bears in all shapes and sizes and was not disappointed. I'm extremely proud of my father's work and was an opportunity for me to share stories about his life and songs. I was also pleased to be able to award prizes for The Best Dressed Bear, The Best Teddy Bear Stall and The Best Loved Teddy”. |
